Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar
Strategic advisory assignment Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar
Rationale
Development is a relatively new function within many cultural institutions, but it’s certainly indispensable. Connection is a key part of this function. Many cultural institutions need a strategic and practical plan of approach for Development.
Introduction
I have been working in the cultural sector for over 15 years, building, developing, and creating from a marketing and development perspective. In recent years, I have become specialised in development. I have followed various training programmes such as Wijzer Werven subsidised by the Ministry of OCW (2016), The Art & Science of Fundraising in New York (2017), and I hold a master’s degree in Relationship Management (2018).
During my time as head of development at the Nederlands Fotomuseum (May 2012 - January 2021), I made strategic connections with funds, companies, and private individuals in cooperation with the board of directors. We were able to add value to partner relations and memberships, all from a perspective of content and creativity. An essential question in every collaboration is how you can strengthen each other’s mission and vision, as this is how you can build substantive relationships and successful projects. These kinds of relationships do not stand on their own: doors can be opened from both sides, and crossovers should be encouraged. I still work from this conviction, and for me, this is the core of what the Development function stands for.
Over the past few months, I have been able to share my knowledge and expertise on development with the Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar (1 May to 1 October 2021) through ROOF-A Development. My work aims to strengthen entrepreneurship by providing advice, coaching, and creating a structure to strategically connect with funds, businesses, and individuals. For this first assignment with ROOF-A Development, my special thanks go out to Patrick van Mil, director of the Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar.
I look forward to using my knowledge and expertise with other cultural institutions and making a substantial contribution to development.
